Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Start-Up Visa Program, you must meet the following core requirements:
1. Meeting the Language Proficiency Requirements
You must take one of the approved language tests (IELTS, CELPIP-G, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada) and achieve a minimum score of CLB 5 in speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Failing to meet this requirement will result in the refusal of your application.
2. Bringing in Enough Settlement Funds
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to settle in Canada for yourself and your dependents. The required amount depends on your family size—from approximately CAD $12,960 for a single applicant up to around CAD $34,299 for a family of seven.
3. Obtaining a Letter of Support from a Designated Organization
A Designated Organization is an approved investor group that supports start-up ventures. To qualify:
- Venture Capital Funds: Must invest a minimum of CAD $200,000.
- Angel Investor Groups: Require an investment of at least CAD $75,000.
- Business Incubators: No minimum investment is required.
Once you secure support, you must obtain a “Letter of Support” along with a commitment certificate from the organization, and include these in your application.
4. Building a Qualifying Business
The business you create must meet the “Qualifying Business” criteria:
- You must hold at least 10% of the corporation’s voting rights at the time of the commitment, and together with the designated organization, control more than 50% of the voting rights.
- You are expected to actively manage the business in Canada once you obtain Permanent Residency.
- The business must be incorporated in Canada and play an essential role in its operations.
Application Fee
The current fee for the Start-Up Visa Program is CAD $2,075 (subject to change). This fee covers the processing costs for your application.
